Naples Jazz Orchestra fans can breathe easier

At Monday's workshop on a proposal to limit special events taking place in downtown Naples, the City Council seemed to agree that shelving concerts by the Naples Jazz Orchestra on Monday nights January through May is no longer a possibility.

Big band supporters turned out in force for the meeting and also bombarded City Hall with emails and phone calls all weekend urging the council to NOT skuttle this series in particular.. The council got the message.

A final decision is expected at tomorrow's regular council meeting. Parking congestion apparently was the issue that caused the stir - and will remain an issue as literally thousands head downtown for this highly regarded concert series.

The City should work with the NJO and local retailers to creatively enhance special-events parking in the area - so the orchestra, the boutiques, the restaurants and other retailers visited by attendees before, during or after the concerts ALL benefit from the series. This way, everybody wins.

Here's the schedule for the 2014 series, which opens January 6 with the NJO and The Four Freshmen as special guests.
